Women on Wednesdays Arts and Culture Project
Celebrates the Creativity, Beauty and Empowerment of Black Girls and Women
New York, NY – The Brecht Forum in association with Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative and Ocean Ana Rising presents Women on Wednesdays Arts and Culture Project (WoW), a month-long series that highlights black girls and women in the fields of theater, music, dance, film, literature, and scholarship every Wednesday in February.With a robust line-up, including award-winning artists and cultural workers such as Saartjie Project, Black Light, Carmen Mojica, Ms. Wise, J Jewels Sandy, Ayanna Williams, El Puente, Marjuan Canady, Cheyenne Ross, Body Ecology Performance Ensemble, Lorna Lowe, Zoe Flowers among others. Performance begin at 7 pm each night and tickets can be purchased at the door between 10 and 15 dollars (sliding scale).
Events include:
February 2
Engage. Create. Empower. featuring: Vocalist: Ayanna Williams, Nina Angela Mercer, Saartjie Project , Ebony Noelle Golden.
February 9
Our Body, Our World featuring: Newark, NJ’s youth performance group “Black Light” with Aimee Cox, spoken word artist Carmen Mojica, and dancer J Jewels Sandy.
February 16
So it is Better to Speak featuring: El Puente Youth Group, Marjuan Canady & her one woman performance piece, “Girls. Girls? Girls!”, and spoken word artists Dominique Morisseau, Cheyenne Ross, and Ms. Wise.
February 19
“Teach the Teacher” day-long teach-in featuring: Ocean Ana Rising’s “Safe Spaces,” Dehejia Maat-Yogi and Artist, BurnBright Lifeworks, Inc., and Carmen Mojica.
February 23
When Love Comes Undone/ Healing Community from the Wounds of Violence featuring: Body Ecology, film maker Lorna Lowe, Medgar Evers College Students and Faculty and playwright Zoe Flowers.
WoW Visual Artists: Raissa A. G. A. Dally, Jessica Valoris and Dehejia Maat will be featured all month.
In addition to the Wednesday programming, on Saturday, February 19th, 10 am to 6 pm, WoW will host a day-long teach-in called “Teach-the-Teacher”, for anyone interested in utilizing artistic expression for social awareness and justice. This teach-in will include creativity sessions, yoga, and a Safe Spaces workshop, emphasizing healing through dance and literary arts.
WoW is also slated to have community arts residencies at Medgar Evers College Center for Women’s Development and El Puente.
The Brecht Forum is a space dedicated to the pursuit of social justice and equality that places human needs forefront in the development of a new culture. Through its diverse programming and events, the forum unites people across social and cultural boundaries and artistic and academic disciplines to promote critical and creative thinking, collaboration, and networking in an independent community-based environment. Betty’s Daughter Arts Collaborative, LLC is a cultural arts direct action group that works to create radical expressiveness in community through a multidisciplinary approach towards cultural work, creativity, social consciousness, and grassroots activism. Ocean Ana Rising is an arts education non-profit organization that empowers, stimulates, and raises awareness through the arts to foster a nurturing global environment full of possibility for women artists of color.
