This community event will kick off with a series of poetry readings from our ancestors accompanied by cultural dance performances of our people and music for the spirit.
There will be fun-filled demonstrations of African doll and mask making where families (especially children) can learn and participate in designing their own projects.
Special displays and exhibits include paintings art by legendary artist Melvin King, an African-American Book presented by Write Press News and quilts on display by various Chicago quilters.
Entertainment highlights include creative performances by Sax Preacher, Seek Ministries and the Harmony Dance Group. We will enjoy the soulful sounds of Joyce Walker and Loretta Lee’s special tribute to Billie Holiday.
The keynote address, Project Me, presented by Ruth Wilson Publisher of Write Press News will discuss the survival strategies of notable African-American historians during the Great Depression and lessons that we must learn from their success.
Craft and Art vendors will be on hand selling distinctive products related to urban business.
A community meal will be served. This event is free and open to the public. Ceremonies will commence promptly at 12:00 Noon with a procession by the Council of Elders.
