http://www.meetup.com/Rational-Living News of Dr. Velten’s death on May 3, 2011 stunned his friends and colleagues, leaving many with a sense of confusion, loss, and grief. Using the very tools that Dr. Velten helped develop and teach, we will explore how to deal with his death, and the circumstances surrounding it. Dr. Velten would have challenged us to de-awfulize, practice our frustration tolerance, and accept life (and death) unconditionally. Share your struggles, and your victories, with the group, and learn in the process.
Dr. Velten earned his baccalaureate degree from the University of Chicago and then earned his PhD in Psychology from The University of Southern California. His doctoral dissertation produced the Velten Mood Induction Procedure, widely used in mood state research. His early career included teaching in Memphis City Schools and the University of Alabama, as well as a position as Chief Psychologist at Yuma County Behavioral Health Services. In San Francisco, he became Clinical Development Director of Bay Area Addiction Research and Treatment, and a Clinical Professor in the University of California system. He later moved back to Arizona (Tucson, then Phoenix) and was for many years the Clinical Director at Assisted Recovery Centers of America.
Throughout most of his career, Dr. Velten was active in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) techniques, most notably Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT), which was developed in the latter half of the 20th century by Dr. Albert Ellis, a close friend and associate of Dr. Velten’s.
Dr. Velten was a long-time member of the Board of Trustees of the Albert Ellis Institute in New York City. With Dr. Ellis, he co-authored two books, When AA Doesn’t Work for You, and Optimal Aging. He edited Under the Influence: Reflections of Albert Ellis in the Work of Others, and Albert Ellis: American Revolutionary (in press). Additionally, Dr. Velten published and/or edited many articles in the areas of REBT and SMART Recovery®, and was editor of the quarterly newsletter, SMART Recovery® News & Views.
