Celebrating the festival of lights

(Free-Press-Release.com) October 19, 2010 -- To mark Diwali, the Indian ‘festival of lights’ and Bandi Chhorr Divas, the Swinburne Punjabi Club hosted Diwali Mela 2010 at the university on Friday 15 October.

The celebration featured a fire and lights show, Desilicious Djs, live Dhol performance and other cultural dance and music performances, Indian food and henna tattooing.

Punjabi Club president Preet Sagar Singh Sanghera said cultural events such as this seek to promote diversity and cultural understanding among different communities living in Melbourne.

“The Punjabi Club not only represents Punjabi culture, which is an integral part of Indian society, but also promotes all Indian traditions to bring people together from many different backgrounds,” Preet said.

"Since the club was formed in 2007, we have provided international and Australian students with a place to socialise and exchange ideas outside of work and study and at the same time, bridge any cultural gaps.”

Diwali, known as the ‘festival of lights’, is one of the biggest Indian celebrations and signifies the victory of good over evil. The festival runs for five days, where the third day is celebrated as the main Diwali festival. This year, Diwali will be held on 5 November.

Bandi Chorh Diwas takes place on the same day as Diwali and recognises the day that Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was released with 52 kings from Gwalior Prison. When he reached Amritsar in India, the people lit up the city with thousands of lights and lamps.
