(Free-Press-Release.com) June 14, 2010 --
Mellon was one of the approximately 160 business, government, and academic and community leaders from across the country who took part in the week-long seminar from June 7-11, 2010. The Seminar is the capstone event of the 10-month curriculum at the Army War College, the Army’s senior educational institution.
The principal purpose of the seminar is to give New Members an opportunity to meet and exchange views with the Nation’s future military leaders and allows Army War College students to better understand the society they serve. Each New Member is assigned to one of the 20 student seminar groups and becomes an active participant in seminar discussions, sharing from their own background, experience, beliefs and perspectives on these issues.
Featured speakers during the week included Professor Susan Herman, president of the American Civil Liberties Union, Dr. Norman Ornstein, resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, Dr. Jennifer Bryson, director of the Islam and Civil Society project at the Witherspoon Institute, and Representative Lee Hamilton, president and director of the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars.
The U.S. Army War College was established in 1901 “not to promote war, but to preserve peace,” in the words of Elihu Root, then Secretary of War. As the Army’s senior service college, it prepares senior military officers to serve in the highest command and staff positions in the Armed Forces of the Unites States. Annually, it provides educational outreach to nearly 7,000 students, program participants, and senior visitors.
The Class of 2010 consists of 336 students representing a cross-section of the joint military, federal agency and multinational security environment: 198 Army officers, 12 Navy, 32 Air Force, 17 Marine Corps and 1 Coast Guard officer, representing Active, Reserve, and National Guard. The Class includes 49 international officers, and 27 senior civilians of federal agencies.
Maj. Gen. Robert M. Williams, commandant of the U.S. Army War College, hosted the seminar.
