Chicago, Illinois, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) July 21, 2011 -- Chicago Scholars today announced an anonymous challenge grant that will help the organization raise $80,000 to fund college and career preparation programming for Chicago students. “Matching students with the right college sets the foundation for long-term academic and career success,” said Karen G. Foley, president of Chicago Scholars. “Working together with our donors, we can double our efforts. By helping our scholars fulfill their dreams of graduating college, we also develop the next generation of leaders Chicago needs to compete in a global economy.”

Money raised through the challenge grant will be used to help Chicago Scholars:

• Provide 40 hours of expert college counseling, helping each student identify a set of good-fit colleges. Without our help, most of these students will aim too low. Market rates for college counseling range from $150 to $300 per hour.

• Deliver a year’s worth of college access programming, including 15 workshops (topics include college selection, financial aid, and transitioning to college). All students and parents receive our college access and success handbooks, available in Spanish and English. The market value of this programming is $3,000 per student.
• Help students prepare five high-quality applications and personal essays for submission to selective and highly selective colleges across the nation. Our staff and mentors spend approximately 50 hours with each student, reviewing applications and related submissions.

People interested in making a donation to Chicago Scholars can contribute on the organization’s website at www.chicagoscholars.org/donate-now.

About Chicago Scholars

Chicago Scholars (chicagoscholars.org) prepares under-resourced Chicago high school students for college and career success. We recently welcomed the class of 2016, our largest and most diverse group with 300 high-potential, college-bound students from approximately 90 Chicago high schools. The program begins at the college admissions stage and continues through undergraduate and graduate school, laying the groundwork for professional success.

We work with partner organizations such as Deloitte (www.deloitte.com), Kirkland & Ellis LLP (www.kirkland.com), Chicago Public Schools (www.cps.edu) and World Sport Chicago (www.worldsportchicago.org), among others, to enhance their existing programs. These additional offerings include: college access and success workshops, a live university onsite admissions forum, a three-tiered mentoring program and summer career exploration exposure sessions.
