Lieutenant Chantal Strawbridge is the commanding officer of HMS Example, a P2000 coastal training vessel which is based alongside HMS Calliope on the banks of the Tyne at Gateshead. She also heads up the University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) where students from Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria Universities learn about and experience naval life. On board HMS Example, students gain practical experience in seamanship, navigation and engineering skills during weekend exercises and longer term deployments.

After gaining a degree in Management Science at Southampton University, Lt Strawbridge joined the Royal Navy in September 2002. Upon successful completion of a Junior Warfare Officer’s Course she took up her first complement assignment as an Officer of the Watch in the frigate, HMS Kent. This was followed by an appointment as the Operations Officer of HMS Mersey for 12 months of Fishery Protection duties. Her naval career has seen her serve all around the globe including the Middle East and the Falkland Islands.

“I’m really looking forward to settling in the North East, “she said. “Historically, the North East has fostered very strong links with the Royal Navy, indeed, many famous ships were built here and everyone in the service loves their run ashore in Newcastle. I’ve a great team behind me and I am delighted to be based in such a vibrant city with a fantastic naval tradition.”

Originally from Bath, Chantal enjoys horse riding, music and hockey in her spare time.
