ChemistDirect.co.uk is aiming to provide its customers with details on which vitamins are best suited to their needs.
Vitamins are a vital ingredient to a healthy lifestyle with new research revealing that high doses of Vitamin B can halve the rate of brain shrinkage in older people experiencing some of the signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
The research, conducted by the Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Ageing (Optima), found that on average, in those taking vitamin supplements, brain shrinkage slowed by 30%.
The amount of vitamins we need depends on our age, health and lifestyle, however the Department for Health recommends taking supplements in respect of only three vitamins: vitamin A, vitamin D and folic acid.
Vitamin A is needed by the retina of the eye in order for it to form the light-absorbing molecule retinal which is vital for colour vision. The vitamin is also necessary for the reproductive systems in male and female mammals. It is also a hormone-like growth factor for epithelial, a tissue composed of cells that line the cavities and surfaces of structures throughout the body.
Vitamin B9 also known as folic acid is essential for the synthesizing of DNA and cell growth. It also aids the formation of red blood cells and amino acids in addition to the production of energy. Folic acid is vital for creating heme, which is crucial for oxygen transport.
Vitamin C is required daily. It is needed to allow the formation of collagen, which helps to maintain teeth, gums, tendons, ligaments and skin. It helps strengthen the immune system and fight cancerous cells.
Vitamin D also known as the “sunshine” vitamin because 15 minutes of exposure to the sunshine, three times a week will enable the body to manufacture all the vitamin D that it needs. It is vitally needed to absorb calcium and strengthen bones and teeth and can prevent the onset of osteoporosis.
If not taken properly, supplements can be flushed through the body without being absorbed. Supplements should be taken with room temperature water because hot or chilled drinks can damage them. It is advised that supplements should be taken with food or as directed by the label. It is also very important not to take lots of different supplements because they can interact with each other and work less effectively e.g. zinc interferes with how copper and iron are absorbed.
