One of the world’s leading dancers has arrived home on Tyneside to help her old dance school raise much needed funds to send youngsters all over the UK and beyond to compete in competitions.
Wallsend born Cherie Butler (34), joined Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance production in 1998 and has lived and worked in the USA, Europe and China. Cherie attributes her success down to sheer hard work, lots of practice and excellent tuition from Barbara Slater who runs “Clann na nGael” Irish Dance Academy in Seghill, ,Wallsend ,Forest Hall and Gosforth.

“I’ve had some fantastic experiences so far in my career with the pinnacle being dancing with Michael Flatley, but I still remember the hours of work I put in with Barbara’s help to get my skills right to audition for Lord of the Dance,” said Cherie. “I know how much effort goes into helping the girls perfect their techniques and I also know how much it costs to give them the opportunities to compete in the Irish Dancing circuits.”
The 2012 Feis (festival) will hopefully see Barbara’s senior team perform in Belfast and in Boston, USA the year after. Cherie is hoping that her influence will inspire the girls aged 15 to 21 to victory. She is also hoping that a sponsor will come forward to help with practicalities such as travel, accommodation and trophies.

Dad Ian Robb, whose daughter Grace attends the classes; believes that Irish dancing is a great hobby for children to participate in.” Grace has been dancing since she was six but there are children as young as three learning the steps. I know where my daughter is, I know she is keeping fit, working as part of a team and doing something worthwhile. The kids have great opportunities to shine just like Cherie is doing now,” he said.
