“Internships provide our scholars with invaluable opportunities to begin developing their talents in real-world situations and building their professional networks,” said Karen G. Foley, president of Chicago Scholars. “The practical experience Isamar and Rui gained at Northwestern will advance them in their academic studies and help to position them for challenging, good-paying careers.”
Both Villasenor and Zhu currently study economics at the University of Chicago, where they expect to graduate with Bachelor of Arts degrees in 2013. During their eight-week internships, Villasenor and Zhu worked in accounts receivable at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
“While working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, I found myself doing work that showed results and progress,” Zhu said. “It is has been a rare experience to see my work used in quarterly reports and used to improve efficiency in patient financial services. The people I’ve worked with have given me some insight into how to further pursue my career and how important networks are, regardless of the career. The internships provided by Chicago Scholars are a great opportunity to point people in the right direction.”
Said Villasenor, “Working with Chicago Scholars has been a great pleasure and has offered many valuable resources that have helped me develop myself and my career. My internship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital has allowed me to explore the different options of working in health care, without a clinical background. I really enjoyed my internship.”

About Chicago Scholars
Chicago Scholars (chicagoscholars.org) prepares under-resourced Chicago high school students for college and career success through a 5-year program model. We recently welcomed the class of 2016, our largest and most diverse group with 300 high-potential, college-bound students from approximately 90 Chicago high schools. The program begins at the college admissions stage and continues through undergraduate and graduate school, laying the groundwork for professional success.
We work with partner organizations such as Deloitte (www.deloitte.com), Kirkland & Ellis LLP (www.kirkland.com), Chicago Public Schools (www.cps.edu) and World Sport Chicago (www.worldsportchicago.org), among others, to enhance their existing programs. These additional offerings include: college access and success workshops, a live university onsite admissions forum, a three-tiered mentoring program and summer career exploration exposure sessions.
