Experience Chicago like never before with Sherie Sloane’s newest paintings on canvas. Sloane conveys her love for art and nature, and portrays the Windy City in yet another surprising artistic approach.
From the vibrant colors of spring tulips in Michigan Avenue, breath-taking lake skies, to the serene silhouettes of Lincoln Park, each Sloane original painting develops a core feeling familiar to those who have come to love Chicago. “Chicago’s appeal is ever-changing, she is never the same city the last time you saw her. The colors and scenes of the city constantly transforms as the seasons change” said Sloane.
Sloane was six months pregnant with their second child when West Loop Curves owners first approached her to exhibit her work at the gallery. Her award winning painting of the Chicago skyline in 2008 caught their attention. But it took the artist mom a while to confirm her interest since raising a toddler while being pregnant already filled up her hectic schedule. Her love of painting and penchant for Chicago won over her reservations. She finished all eight paintings for the show a week before her due date.
Although best known for her watercolors, Sloane originally started painting in oils and acrylics. The series of paintings in ‘Chicago Skies and Silhouettes’ are all done in acrylics. “I have applied the same principle of keeping the brushstrokes fresh to keep the spontaneous, painterly feel, as I would with watercolors. Raising a toddler and being pregnant on my last trimester, painting with acrylics were more accommodating to my schedule. I can just leave my work in the studio and get back into it when time permits, which is usually at night or when our two-year old naps.”
West Loop Curves owners’ Sherrie Adams and Mark Zalewski are proud to have Sloane’s works on exhibit. They admire not only her talent, but for being a great mom and an advocate for promoting arts to children. “We’re very excited since it’s the first time we have a pregnant artist exhibiting in our gallery, not to mention a very talented one. Women like her are truly inspirational.” they said.
Aside from painting, Sloane also writes weekly in her art blog ‘The Morning Artist’. Her essays, stories and snippets of works in progress have gained loyal following since launching her blog last year. She is also a contributing artist in the popular online gallery, Daily Painters Marketplace and has won six prestigious awards in the last four years. As a way of giving back to the community, Sloane conducts live painting demonstrations at the Chicago Children’s Museum in Navy Pier every summer.
