Pets for Patriots, Inc., a not-for-profit that connects shelter pets with veteran and service members of the United States military, is honored to add the Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS), the Animal Welfare League and Angels on Wheels to their nationwide network working to place at-risk shelter pets in happy homes.
“Naperville Area Humane Society is proud to partner with Pets for Patriots, because we know that we are here to help people as much as we are here for pets,” says Angie Wood, Executive Director of the NAHS.

http://petsforpatriots.org/ Woods particularly likes that Pets for Patriots focuses on adult, special needs and other at-risk animals, noting it was a key reason NAHS decided to participate. “Sadly, it is the adult animals that stay in our shelter the longest,” Woods notes.
“Saving a pet is only half the battle,” says Beth Zimmerman, founder and executive director of Pets for Patriots. “Surrender prevention is an essential aspect of our mission, and our veterinary partners are critical to helping us lower the overall cost of pet ownership for veterans and military personnel.”
Dubbed the “Largest Humane Society in Chicago,” the Animal Welfare League has joined Pets for Patriots as both an adoption and veterinary partner. Pets for Patriots program members adopting from any of the charity’s Chicagoland shelters, including the League, can receive an ongoing 10% discount off veterinary services from the League’s veterinary clinic.
“When we were first contacted by Pets for Patriots, we thought it was such a great idea we wanted to get on board immediately,” says Terri Sparks, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for the Animal Welfare League. “Besides showing our support for our veterans, we hope to find loving homes for many of our hard-to-place dogs and cats.”
Sparks echoes support for the charity’s dedication to last-chance animals. “This program really helps bring them to the forefront of our adoptions,” she says. “I hope more shelters get involved!”
Angels on Wheels Animal Rescue is another valuable adoption partner. They seek out neglected animals from high kill shelters on death row and foster them in private homes, where they are socialized and rehabilitated prior to adoption.
Those interested in the program must first apply through Pets for Patriots and provide proof of their military service. Approval typically takes two business days, after which veterans can work with the Naperville Area Humane Society, Angels on Wheels and the Animal Welfare League for assistance in choosing their new best friend, and visit the League’s veterinary clinic for discounted pet care.
