Most books reach a popularity peak and then gradually fade away, but Chickens, Mules and Two Old Fools by Victoria Twead refuses to obey that rule.
Time has flashed by since Victoria nagged her long-suffering partner into abandoning England’s grey shores and relocating to Spain, but her book popularity has continued togather in strength. Last year, it remained in the Amazon Top 100 for nearly four months, and this year it’s already been snapped up by two foreign
publishers.
Sometimes we need to relax with a book that makes us feel good, laugh and forget recession depression. Victoria Twead has provided exactly that with her hilarious page-turner, a book that bursts with irreverent humour, eccentric characters, animals and Spanish sunshine. Described by a reviewer as ‘Chris Stewart meets James Herriot’, Chickens is set in sun-scorched Andalucía and describes Victoria and Joe’s life-changing move to a tiny village tucked in the Alpujarra mountains. The couple have no idea of the culture shock awaiting them; no idea they’ll become reluctant chicken farmers or own the most dangerous cockerel in Spain.
Things begin badly when their removal lorry destroys the village fountain and, from then on, life is never dull. Victoria and Joe imagined their new life would be peaceful and uneventful, rural Spain a perfect place to retire, but village life dictated otherwise. They find themselves befriended by an 85-year-old spliff-smoking sex-kitten, while their Spanish neighbours attempt to teach them Spanish ways. They help capture a vulture and are even rescued by a mule. But, at the end of five years, they must decide: will they stay, or return to the relative sanity of England?
It is Twead’s relaxed style that draws one into the book and into her life. As you read, you may find yourself reaching for a saucepan, as delicious Spanish recipes, given to Twead by the village ladies, are woven into the story. Described as ‘charming’ by The Telegraph, ‘engaging’ and ‘hilarious’ by HarperCollins, one feels as though one is sitting at the kitchen table with Twead, sipping sangria and nibbling tapas as she relates the latest old fools’ misadventures. Or, as the Catalunya Chronicle wrote, ”Weeks later, after finishing the book, you will be standing at your kitchen window doing the dishes and then recall some fleeting scene with chickens or mules or two old fools and laugh out loud all over again.”
Following Chickens, the sequel, Two Old Fools ~ Olé’ was hatched, which promises to become just as popular as its predecessor. It is soon to be followed by Two Old Fools on a Camel – Victoria and Joe's astonishing adventures as teachers in the Middle East as the Arab Spring erupted.
But, judging by its growing success, Chickens has certainly not finished flying yet.
