Anxiety disorders are one of the most common concerns that present in the childhood years with approximately 12% of children experiencing clinical levels of anxiety. Often the anxiety symptoms interfere in the child’s life and with family functioning, and this interference has been shown to continue into adulthood. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is highly effective for reducing the symptoms and interference for both children and adults with anxiety disorders. Learning the basic principles of treatment and the main components of CBT for anxiety disorders may help parents, teachers and mental health professionals understand the therapy process and further ensure that the children obtain the type of therapy that has been shown to be most beneficial in treating anxiety disorders.
