At the Black Diamond Kids Martial Arts Academy, its not the same-old, same-old in terms of Boosting Confidence for kids. A new turn in self defense helps RI's youth from Bullies in a new way.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wakefield, Rhode Island, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) January 13, 2012 -- "Confidence" is a buzz-word in the martial arts world, especially with children. The raise of bullying and cyber-bullying have given rise to a wave of concern from parents and guardians, and in many cases, a martial arts school is the first call that parents make.

At the Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts Academy (in Wakefield, RI), head instructors hone in on the factors that they believe foster 'true confidence' in children. The question begins with an understanding of what 'confidence' means in the first place.

National martial arts champion and Academy owner Daniel Faggella comments: "Most people assume that by 'empowering' children with techniques, they will automatically be imbued with confidence, but this isn't the case. Especially in the martial arts, a genuine sense of confidence comes from the actual application of technique that fosters a belief in themselves, in addition to opportunities of leadership and assertiveness within the martial arts class. We can't always control what's happening at school, but in the Academy children build character that sticks with them no matter where their challenges might be."

For Black Diamond's kids students, the emphasis is not on spinning swords or flying karate nunchucks, but on building the awareness to avoid danger (including that of bullies), and working on core aspects of balance, stance, and realistic self-defense techniques. Their kids curriculum teaches the essentials of arts like Muay Thai kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - but in a step-by-step way that allows the children to get up to speed quickly (http://rikidsmartialarts.com/).

Children's martial arts instructor Joshua Labossiere sees the art of teaching kids as about understanding the art of combining fun and enthusiasm into the mix: "We don't believe in yelling out 'moves' and having children stand in place and punch the air for 45 minutes. Discipline and focus are essential, but we structure that into a format that also mixes in games which develop agility, grip strength, endurance, and good balance. Without these elements - and a curriculum that works - that martial arts experience becomes dry - the OPPOSITE of what our classes are like here."

The biggest emphasis in terms of martial arts technique comes from the influence of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (also known as Gracie Jiu Jitsu, made famous my founder Helio Gracie and his sons Royce Gracie and Rickson Gracie). This is an entire martial art based on how a smaller, weaker individual can take down a larger, stronger attacker. The emphasis is on dealing with situations where one is held down, taken down, or restrained.

Learning how to get out from under a bully and how to escape a headlock are some of the first skills the children learn at Black Diamond, and that's something their proud to say sets them apart. "Real self defense promotes confidence because it works, and the fact of the matter is that when a bully wants to tackle someone and hold them down, all the back-flip-kicks in the world can't help, but Jiu Jitsu can save them" says Coach Dan.

Since moving into the Peace Dale Mill Complex, Black Diamond Mixed Martial Arts has expanded their children's classes to encompass a variety of age groups.
