[Wilmington], [DE],[21 Jul 2011] – Chinese government blocked access to www.vpnmaster.com - one of the largest USA based VPN Service providers. Company’s spokesperson James Wilkins said: “We were shocked today seeing our customers in China can no longer access www.vpnmaster.com” James Wilkins stated: “This is a clear offense to internet liberties and Chinese government showed once again that they are against freedom of speech.”
In China internet is strictly controlled and access to sites like Facebook and Youtube is blocked. Many internet users in China use public proxy servers or commercial VPN (Virtual Private Network) providers to access blocked sites. VPNMaster is one of those providers located in USA. Beijing has a vast infrastructure of technology to keep an eye on any potential online dissent. It also applies lots of human eyeballs to monitoring. The agencies that watch over the Net employ more than 30,000 people to prowl Web sites, blogs, and chat rooms on the lookout for offensive content as well as scammers. In the U.S., by contrast, the entire CIA employs an estimated 16,000 people.
At February 14th, days after Facebok and Twitter added fuel to a revolt in Egypt, the Obama administration had announced a new policy on Internet freedom, intended to help people get around barriers in cyberspace while making it harder for autocratic governments to use the same technology to repress dissent.
Just after a few months Chinese government answered this by blocking access to VPN providers. VPNMaster is one of the first ones that were punished. Sources from Chinese government say there will be more to come.
James Wilkins said: “We are a small USA corporation. We cannot fight with Chinese government. We feel very sorry for our all customers in China. Most of our customers are USA citizens, trying to reach home using our services. We will do our best to bypass this unethical and illegal block. We already announced our new backup address. Our customers can reach us by our new web address: www.mastervpn.info.”
