Chloramines Affecting Consumer’s Water Treatment Choices
One of the issues discussed between water authorities, the EPA and the State Commissions on Environmental Quality, is how to convert to chloramine disinfection prior to receiving surface water.
Patrick Dalee; former President of the Water Quality Association, current WQA member, and COO for DuPure http://www.dupure.com ; a Houston-based water treatment company endorsed by major home builders, states, “ Chloramines are compounds made up of chlorine and ammonia used to better manage increased levels of contaminants in surface water. “
For U.S. Residents, these chemical treatments represent the continuation of state and local water treatment regulation effectively killing much of the microorganisms like bacteria, protozoa, and viruses in drinking water causing fatal illnesses such as typhoid and cholera.
Unfortunately, the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality states that, “cancer among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine.” There are also side effects associated with Chloramines, including adverse reactions when chloramines and chlorines are mixed. The EPA has raised skin absorption of chlorine to its top ten carcinogen watch list. Showering is suspected as the primary cause of elevated levels of chloroform in nearly every home because of the chlorine in the water. Inhalation is more harmful as chlorine gas or chloroform goes directly into our blood stream. Just a few minutes of research into the harmful effects of chlorine and chloramines will overwhelm you.
Pat Dalee comments, “Federal, State, and Local authorities are mitigating risk for consumers with economically viable treatment solutions like chlorine and chloramines but the approach is incomplete. Our country simply can’t afford to appropriately repair our water infrastructure and upgrade water treatment technology. The EPA and the President’s Cancer Panel indicate that the public needs to take it upon themselves to meet public health goals. “
More concerning, is the response many residential water treatment companies are providing consumers. Independent water dealers, despite efforts by the Water Quality Association, dominate the industry and all too often operate to no standard other than profit motive. The inefficient dealer model provides little benefit to the consumer in need of water treatment solutions that satisy unique water challenges. Water Technology Magazine, a leading water treatment industry magazine, in January of 2010 initiated an industry study determining that “Dealer Sales Ethics was a very important industry issue.” The industry rates itself as failing in the category of sales ethics. The second most important issue is, in tough times, dealers looking for all the price, quality and value-added advantages available from manufacturers and distributors. If independent dealers, including some industry fore-runners, need additional leverage from suppliers they certainly aren’t going to get it during an economic downturn. These top two industry operating issues place further pressure on independent dealers to misrepresent product/service capabilities. This disposition for many dealers extends to the misrepresentation of warranties that may have surprising limitations impacting the consumer’s health, wallet and home.
For Houston and Galveston residents, the issue of protecting homes and health has become a challenging one, but not insurmountable. Stuart Tillman, CEO of DuPure http://www.dupure.com states, “It is critical to find a company that offers more than just Petroleum-Based Water Softening Products. The big home improvement retailers and most of the water industry only bring Petroleum Based Products to the consumer. In many cases, dealers are also neglecting to explain that chlorines must be kept out of petroleum-based systems for them to function properly. The components required to protect from chlorine are over-looked purposely so the consumer is forced into unforeseen and expensive annual service charges. In addition, petroleum-based systems cannot satisfy all point-of-entry water treatment applications. It is necessary to find water treatment companies that offer petroleum-based, crystal-based and physical-based water treatment solutions. For example, in Houston if a consumer has chloramines in their water a Petroleum-Based system will break down over time. The chlorine ammonia bond is too strong, stays in the system and destroys the resins. It is important to find a company that has the diversity of product and level of consultation available to provide the best possible water treatment solutions. Special concerns should be given to expecting or nursing mothers and dialysis patients.“
