FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) September 24, 2011 --
The world is in the rush. And we are too.
Further, faster, more...
There is, however, one moment in the year when we stop and calm down. Staying with our family, warmed up by fireplace we come back to our childhood memories.
This moment is Christmas.
In many countries the most recognizable symbol of Christmas is Christmas tree.
Christmas tree is known to be a Geman custom but in fact its roots are in England. In the VIII century, Saint Boniface from Devon set off to Europe to spread/propagate Christianity to Germanic tribes. At that time the evergreen fir was known to be a sign of Christianity and immortal God. The Germanic tribes worshipped oak, which was richly decorated during winter holiday. Legend has it that Boniface, to protest against the pagan celebration, cut the oak which was the center of it. Much to everyone’s surprise a fir has grown out of the cut.
The custom of decorating a tree comes from Germany. It arrived to Britain together with queen Charlotte, king’s George III wife. In 1800 the queen decorated a small yew tree with toys, sweets and candles. This tradition didn’t go out of the royal court until 1848 when The Illustrated London News published a picture of the royal family gathered around the Christmas tree. The illustration stirred imagination of its readers and soon there were Christmas trees all over British homes.
In the Victorian times there were candles lit on Christmas tree. First electric lights showed up in 1895.
Traditionally, to decorate a Christmas tree people used cookies, heart-shaped ginger breads, nuts, small red apples (so called crabapples), handcrafted decorations made of blotting paper, feather, blown eggs, straw etc. With time all these decoration were replaced by glass ornaments. First, they were round, later simply shaped, in the end very sofisticated in form and colours.
Each of those glass ornaments is a small piece of art. To make them look delightful and shiny they are hand made. Among the most valuable ornaments are those manufactured in Poland. Only few companies (for example Luxorna – please see www.luxorna.co.uk) make the ornaments strictly according to the old technologies by using only spirit and water paints and dedicating a lot of time to decorate an ornament with the tiniest details. Only those, who love this work and know all the secrets of technology can conjure up amazing and beautiful ornaments. This craft is appreciated all around the world.
Now and then, with the whole family, children hang their favourite ornaments. Years will pass and the same children will smile when taking out of an old box beautiful, glass snowman. Or they will recall their childhood while admiring on a Christmas tree a pair of small, wonderful baby shoes, which they were presented on their third Christmas.
This moment will come, as every year, for Christmas.
