CHURCH SUPPORTS TRAUMA SURVIVOR GROUP
CHURCH SUPPORTS TRAUMA SURVIVOR GROUP
The unseen misery of trauma survivors is their inability to tell their experience to an understanding listener. Trauma Survivors Group at this church will meet a "crying need."
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) October 12, 2009 --
Dr. Cynthia Weems, pastor of First United Methodist Church of Miami, announced today the formation of a group dedicated to the needs of trauma survivors.
All too often people express little concern for others who have suffered a severe trauma. The attitude seems to be, “Hey! They ought to be glad they survived.” Yet, more than physical scars remain after a life-threatening accident.
When asked why the church should invest scarce resources for such a little known cause, Dr. Weems pointed out that the church has the responsibility to minister to the whole person.
She says, "The church has a clear mandate to minister to the body, mind and spirit. As Jesus taught, ‘If they are hungry, feed them. If they are ill-clad, clothe them. If they are hurting, comfort them.’ We consider it a priviledge to serve the community in this way."
A new member, Steve Wilkinson, a trauma survivor himself, approached Dr. Weems with the need for a Trauma Survivor’s group. She said, “You organize it and we’ll support you.”
Mr. Wilkinson began immediately to marshal resources and plan for the group. It will meet the second and fourth Thursdays of the month at 400 Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami, Florida.
