Classical Music lovers benefit from production partnership between world Class orchestra and leading radio station

The London Philharmonic Orchestra shows further commitment to the UK's leading orchestras vision of 5 years ago with unique production partnership with Global City Radio.

(Free-Press-Release.com) February 9, 2012 -- In 2007, Alison Atkinson joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra a new role that signaled the orchestra’s commitment to using technology to expand its reach - as part of a unique ten year pledge signed by England’s eight leading symphony orchestras.

In an ambitious ten year vision ‘Building on excellence: orchestras for the 21st century’, the eight orchestras pledged to create new ways to share the performance experience by:

- developing audiences, building understanding of classical music and how to appreciate it
- revolutionising their approach to technological innovation

Atkinson, became the LPO’s first Digital Projects Manager said at the time:

“......... along with seven other leading symphony orchestras, the LPO pledged to revolutionise its approach to technological innovation. This is an exciting time for orchestras - staying abreast of new technology will help us to respond to the changing world around us, enable us to access new and younger audiences and provide new ways to enjoy music. "

“Initially, I’ll be developing the LPO website so that it is more interactive and enhances existing projects. I’ll also be looking at how we can use technological developments to become a valuable resource for schools, communities and enthusiasts.”

England’s eight leading symphony orchestras are: Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra; City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra; London Philharmonic Orchestra; London Symphony Orchestra; Philharmonia; Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé.


One of the manifestations of this vision is to seek out partners who will bring new audiences and share the vision and such a partner has been Global City Radio. Global City Radio is one of the most popular online Radio stations for the over 40s in the UK. The station brings a rich mix of music and programming including Classical Pop, Audio Drama, Opera, Talk shows and of course Classical. Global City agreed to add an extra 5 hours of general Classical Music to its schedule and 'Classical Hour' produced and presented by Alison Atkinson to the weekend early evening schedule. About the alliance
With excellence as the driving force, the group – launched in April 2007 - aims to show the impact that orchestras have in their communities, young people and with hard to reach groups in their education and outreach work. They aim to show how they are embracing new technology to broaden access to classical music and how they are boosting Britain’s image abroad through extensive touring. 
Using these themes, the group mapped out a vision for orchestras entitled; Building on Excellence:  Orchestras for the 21st century. Pledges include:


1. Creating the performers, composers and enthusiasts of the future
 - Perform live for every child during their time at school
 - Make Britain the world centre for new composition
 - Develop the artists and enthusiasts of the future, focusing on access and support
 - Establish a high profile prize for classical music.

2. Sharing our skills to benefit communities
 - Achieve a step-change in community music making, doubling the number of people engaged and involved as amateur musicians and singers

 - Ensure orchestras play an active role in connecting with communities and diverse cultures
 - Anticipate cultural and social change to ensure that our orchestras reflect their local communities.

3.  Creating new ways to share the performance experience
 - Put classical music within reach of every adult in the UK
 - Develop audiences, building understanding of classical music and how to appreciate it
 - Revolutionise our approach to technological innovation.

4.  Promoting orchestral excellence in Britain and across the world
 - Visit every continent over the next five years

 - Make Britain the destination for classical music
 - Lead a cultural mission alongside each UK trade mission.
