Despite being blind for over 25 years, adventurer and motivational speaker Miles Hilton Barber has continued to live out his dreams at the same time as encouraging everyone to look at their personal goals and achieve what at first might seem to be impossible. His remarkable adventures in recent years have included flying a micro light aircraft from London to Sydney, man hauling a sledge more than 250 miles over Antarctica and climbing to more than 17,500 feet in the Himalayas.

The idea to ask Miles to speak at a motivational event at Sunderland University in front of 250 specially invited guests was the brainchild of Mark Clelland; Director of Gateshead based, Cool Blue Training. Mark realised that the qualities he was teaching as part of a Management and Leadership Development Programme were all personified by the bravery and determination of the adventurer himself. “With Cool Blue entering its 3rd year in business I wanted to organise something special for my staff, clients and guests that would leave a lasting positive impression on them all,” said Mark.” It suddenly struck me that when we are delivering training modules about motivation and leadership that the example of people like Miles can be tremendously powerful and spur on others to do equally well in life.”

Cool Blue Training was formed by ex college lecturer Mark in 2008. In the past two years, he has taken on two members of staff and a growing clientele which includes universities, councils, colleges and small to medium businesses. Cool Blue Training offers specialist training including management development programmes, driving courses, heath and safety and first aid. There’s more good news on the horizon too as Cool Blue are moving into larger office premises within their current site, rebranding their corporate identity including a new website and are looking to take on an apprentice within the coming months.

While Mile’s success is attributed to determination and a not insignificant amount of personal courage, Mark feels that his business is succeeding because of the way his customers are given the best possible customer service experience coupled with expert training. “We pride ourselves on our positive can do attitude and although we don’t do polar exploration or desert trekking we will go the last mile for our customers,” said Mark. “Mile’s talk was amazing and reminds us what we can all do with the right attitude, motivation and training.”
