Coconut Grove Artist George Rodez Submits his Peacock to The Coconut Grove Peacock Tour 2010

(Free-Press-Release.com) May 30, 2010 -- On Saturday, May 29, 2010, the The Peacock Promenade Launch Party was held at the Mayfair Promenade in Coconut Grove between 5 and 11 p.m. The Launch Party was a way of introducing the wonderful array of peacocks painted by local artists to the community. Fashioned after the Cows in Chicago, the Cincinnati Pig Gig and The Flamingos of Miami Beach, Coconut Grove will host a herd of beautiful peafowl this summer 2010. The Coconut Grove Peacock Tour was created to bring a unique interactive public art exhibition to Coconut Grove.

The larger than life fiberglass peacocks decorated by Coconut Grove Artists, sponsored by businesses and individuals and benefiting local charities and non-profit organizations will be on display throughout the Coconut Grove village and main thorough fares starting June 2010 for six months, with a charity auction and black tie Peacock Ball held in October 2010.

George Rodez was one such artist selected to design a peacock, or in this case a peahen. His design was a take from his very unique, bold, vibrant and colorful Afro-Caribbean series for which he has received national as well as international acclaim with well known personalities such as 7-time Grammy award winning Gloria Estefan, and CBS' The Early Show weathercaster, Lonnie Quinn, just to name a couple, owning some of his works.

In his Afro-Caribbean series Rodez uses subjects and images that would normally be used in folkloric Cuban paintings and gives them a modern pop-ish twist. Rodez claims that what he accomplishes in creating this body of work is a sense of voyaging back to Cuba, transforming it, and making it fresh and new, as if never touched by 51 years of stagnation. The works act as a defibrillator bringing back to life the Cuba, Before Castro, and foretelling of the possibilities of a new beginning for the lost island of ruins.

In "Club Tropicana presents: Penelopeacock" Rodez attempts to bring back the heydays of yesteryears when Club Tropicana in Havana was the largest and most beautiful nightclub in the world. The showgirls at the Tropicana, known collectively as "Las Diosas de Carne" (or "Flesh Goddesses"), were renowned the world over for their voluptuousness, and the cabaret showcased a kind of sequin-and-feather musical theater that would be copied in Paris, New York, and Las Vegas. The lavish shows were staged by Neyra. Headliners included Xavier Cugat, Paul Robeson, Yma Sumac, Carmen Miranda, Nat King Cole, Josephine Baker and Liberace. Heralded as a "Paradise Under the Stars," the Tropicana became known for its showgirls, conga sounds, domino tournaments and flashy, spectacular productions. Penelopeacock is Rodez's attempt to capture the lavishness of those showgirls.

Rodez is also paying tribute to the peacock, which is a colorful, unique, and elegant bird often associated with royalty and exotic locales, such as those found throughout Coconut Grove. Its vibrant blues, iridescent greens, and large ornate feathers with their intriguing "eye" designs make the peacock a truly stand-out species.
