I have discovered that although the Irish consumer may have been more conservative than their US counterparts in the past, they are now truly looking to break out of their design comfort zones. They are looking for a more refined look with a contemporary flair and are discovering that an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary pieces are an integral part of achieving that look.

That being said, the main challenge I saw on my return to Ireland was the ability to easily source such products. The concept for 'The Interiors Directory' was developed out of sheer frustration trying to source unique and interesting products in Ireland. It's not that such products aren't here in Ireland, it was just so difficult to find them.

I founded http://www.interiorsdirectory.ie to provide a highly targeted yet easy to use, online resource directory for all interiors related products and services.

2. Have you noticed a surge in people refurbishing their homes in light of the fact that they are no longer in a position to trade up?
Definitely! People are deciding to stay put and electing to extend or redecorate instead. This is a trend that is likely to continue. The end result however is even more interesting. Homeowners are looking to create more comfortable, relaxing spaces that will stand the test of time. They are looking for quality as well as value for their money, in fact they are demanding it. But being financially conscious is not stopping consumers from seeking out high quality and well designed furniture, art, lighting and accessories.

3. Dado rails, flock wallpaper, paisley curtains.... which one interior design faux pas stops you in your tracks?
Oh, it has to be flock wallpaper, it's up there on the 'Decorating Don'ts' list with woodchip wallpaper and borders! There are so many great choices for wall coverings out there, but if you have your heart set on wallpaper, why not consider natural seagrass or metallics?

4. What’s your favourite item of furniture?

It's got to be the Phillipe Starck 'Ghost Chair', it's so versatile and surprisingly comfortable. A true classic, it can be used as a dining chair, accent chair or a desk chair. It's transparent qualities, makes it the perfect choice for a small space, as it can eliminate the look of clutter, but it is works equally as good in a room with an ornate decor, as it won't detract from the focal point in the room.

5. You’re a big champion of mixing retro with modern furniture. Which one item of vintage furniture would you love to get your hands on?

I would love to get my hands on an Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. I have always wanted to reupholster one in ivory coloured leather, to give it more of a feminine feeling. It's 'Arts and Crafts' styling make it a perfect choice in any architectural space. They were built to last a lifetime, so I figure I still have time to find a true original! For those of you who dare to be different, why not visit us at the Ideal Homes Showhouse from October 22nd -25th and see firsthand the eclectic mix of vintage and modern elements that we have creatively put together to achieve a very classic look!

6. What’s the best way of coming across good retro pieces at affordable prices?
You have to shop around, but when you find what you are looking for, don't forget to negotiate for the best price! The internet is your best bet, but don't forget to check out the companies listings on interiorsdirectory.ie, we showcase companies that have something for every style and budget including companies showcasing quality retro pieces.

7. Those attending the Ideal Home Show can call in for free design advice. Is there any one recurring issue that comes up time and time again with your clients?
I have found that clients consistently have a fear of using colour. Too many houses are decorated in the many shades of beige, it is a safe choice after all. Colour is one of the most important elements in any room but you can draw inspiration for the final colour palette from the colours you already like. Don't be too influenced by trends, they were not created with you in mind.

8. For people who want to give their home The Brown Thomas look on a Boyers budget, what do you recommend?

Large scale art and accessories always create a classic, sophisticated look. If you can't afford an original painting, don't worry, over sized framed art prints will achieve the same desired effect. Don't clutter the room with accessories, less is often more. Group accessories to achieve that classic look, try grouping clear or silver candles sticks of different sizes and shapes. Keep your accessories as natural as possible, fresh flowers always work well, so does fresh fruit (in the kitchen) or hand made soaps (in the bathroom).

9. For first time-home owners on a limited budget, what are the design essentials they can’t do without?
If you are a first-time homeowner on a limited budget, focus on the build in or fixed elements first, such as the windows, kitchen, flooring and bathroom fixtures. Be true to your own style and don't follow trends, as trends come and go. You can always finish off the room(s) over time with furniture and accessories that can easily be added later.

10. Which celebrity’s home would you most like to have a nosy round?

It would have to be Kevin McCloud. He’s always in pursuit of design perfection, so I’d definitely be curious to see what his Grand Designed home looks like!
