Despite the hustle and bustle, you definitely choose to stop by your local record store while you’re out shopping for a break from the greedheads in the malls. After all, who knows what treasures have been unloaded at the record store in a last minute attempt to get some Christmas cash? I know it sounds almost bizarre, but I have found some real gems around this time of year. I've witnessed people unloading whole treasure troves of rare or hard-to-find wonders, all in a last-ditch effort to rescue Christmas from a financial pinch. Christmastime is my favorite hunting time for new wax, and the excitement of unearthing a valuable gem has made my Christmas many times over, especially when faced with the dim prospect of my other gifts—a few pairs of socks, or a tie I would never wear for obvious reasons.
But there is another side to Christmas Vinyl: the collectability factor.
Christmas Vinyl is practically its own industry. There are the 45’s released by artists like the Eagles, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis, Bon Jovi, Stryper, the Beatles, the Drifters, The Beach Boys, John Denver and even Spinal Tap. Then there are the memorable LP vinyls of Christmas past, the ones that get harder and harder to find over time (and especially in good condition), like Mannheim Steamroller, Barbra Streisand, Twisted Sister, Kenny G, Neil Diamond and Trans Siberian Orchestra. Going back even further, there are 10” vinyl records from the 40’s and 50’s and even some early 60’s records, featuring classic (and collectable) Christmas treats from the likes of Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and the other classic crooners of that era. There are certainly a few noteworthy offerings in the classical department, and then we even have Children’s Christmas Vinyl, featuring Frosty the Snowman, Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Merry Christmas Charlie Brown, all of which sound as good to our ears as they do to any kids' ears. Let’s face it: there is almost any style out there in a Christmas or holiday theme that young or old alike can find and enjoy. And if the record is in good shape, it can be quite collectable.
But beyond the matter of collectability, there is the excuse of Christmas to either buy Christmas albums on your own list, or to get a newer, younger collector started on their own vinyl collection. The Christmas album is back in a big way, and everyone is taking a crack at it, from newer artists like Kid Rock and Maroon 5 to ones a few years older, like Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, Rob Zombie, Iron Maiden, and KISS. There is, of course, also the stuff that many of us cut our teeth on: Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, The Grateful Dead and even Blue Note artists or the likes of Johnny Cash and Jimmy Buffett. You can find that a lot of these classics and new releases have even been issued in 180 gram audiophile versions. And believe me, putting a great album in someone's hands is worth a lot more than putting a video game controller in their hands. Heck, the latest and greatest video game will be out of style in a year. But a Hendrix LP? That should be good for another 50 years or so, wouldn’t you think?
There's also the economic side to consider when purchasing Christmas albums. You are supporting the music and artists by buying their products. You're also supporting your local record stores, as well as favorite online retailers and record manufacturers. In my opinion, that kind of support is just good karma for the holidays. And who knows? You may be helping to spark the next generation of vinyl LP lovers to carry on our cause.
There is just something special about pulling out vinyl from years gone by and putting it on the turntable. With Christmas tree aglow and fire roaring, the needle drops into the groove and the sounds of Christmas come alive. You slip back into a chair and read the liner notes, studying every nook and cranny on the cover. This discovery, this tactile thrill, is something that was lost when CD’s came, and it's certainly long gone with digital downloads.
I wish you all a Happy Holiday. And I hope that you have the opportunity to share your love for music with others in your life, be they young or old. It is the most rewarding feeling there is… well, at least it seems that way to me.
