No one escapes the feeling of sadness. This is because it is inevitable for people to go through bad situations as losing a loved one, job loss, financial difficulties, breakup, and so on. But when sadness is so intense that it overwhelmingly affects the person’s interest in almost everything in life, it may already be depression.
Depression is a very disabling mental illness. The person suffering from it becomes less productive and indecisive in work and does not enjoy the company of friends and family as he used to. Along with the intense feeling of sadness, the depressed person may complain of physical pains and fatigue with no apparent cause. Also, depression may lead to severe mental and physical illnesses as it negatively affects appetite and sleep. The feeling of low self-esteem, hopelessness and helplessness are believed to be the causes of suicidal attempts in depressed people.
But no matter how frightening the effects of depression are to a sufferer’s life, in general, the good thing is—it is treatable. The depressed person may consider psychotherapy, exercise, meditation, relaxation techniques, stress management, support groups or antidepressant drugs for treatment of depression.
If a person thinks he is suffering from depression, then it is advisable for him to consult a mental health professional for the best option appropriate for his needs. Antidepressant drugs, combined with other self-help strategies, are effective in treating severe depression. Depression is believed to be an effect of a chemical imbalance in the brain. These chemicals are responsible for normal functioning of the brain as in controlling mood and way of thinking.
Antidepressant drugs help restore the brain’s chemical balance, thereby, help relieve depression by reducing extreme sadness and lifting up the mood of a person. Antidepressant drugs may be the easiest option but should be used with caution and with the guidance of a mental health professional as it may be safe and may work effectively for some people than others.
Antidepressant drugs come in several types as tricyclic (TCAs), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs). TCAs and MAOIs are the older forms of antidepressant drugs which are effective in treating depression but TCAs have more side effects while MAOIs interact with certain foods and beverages. On the other hand, SSRIs and SNRIs are the newer forms of antidepressant drugs which have the same efficacy as that of the older forms but have tolerable side effects and are less dangerous in overdose.
People respond to antidepressant drugs in different ways. The years of experience and practice of a mental health professional would be a valuable resource for the appropriate treatment of a patient with depression. If antidepressant drugs are used with the guidance of a mental health professional, then its side effects are definitely tolerable and short-lived as the treatment is tailored to the patient’s needs.
