Commit to Quit – NIFS Offers a Free Smoking Cessation Program in January 2010 with a Fitness Perk
The impact of tobacco use on individuals health is widely known; current statistics continue to list cigarette smoking as the leading preventable cause of death.

If you are one of the many individuals wanting to kick the smoking habit this New Year, then the National Institute for Fitness and Sport can help with it’s FREE, 5-week smoking-cessation program Thursday nights from 6:00pm – 7:00pm starting January 21, 2010. Participants in the program with also receive a FREE gym pass during the night of their program, along with a “Quit Kit”, Group Support and Cessation Aid Information.
“Offering this free program is NIFS way of giving back to the Indianapolis community,” says Callie Johnson, NIFS Butt-Out Instructor and Wellness Program Manager at NIFS. “When individuals quit smoking, they see big health benefits right away. Quitting also drastically improves their long-term health – allowing them to enjoy their family longer while cutting down on their out of pocket health care costs. The impact of tobacco use on individuals health is widely known; current statistics continue to list cigarette smoking as the leading preventable cause of death, stating that those who smoke die, on average, 13 to 14 years earlier than non-smokers.
Cigarette smoking also costs more than $96 billion annually in health care expenditures. The American Cancer Society states that cigarette smoking alone accounts for about 30% of all cancer as well as other serious health problems. The cost to employers for tobacco users in their workforce is staggering as well. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) report that tobacco users can cost more than $3,800 per year in additional health care costs, lost productivity, and absenteeism when compared with their tobacco-free colleagues.
