FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Oakton, Virginia, United States of America (Free-Press-Release.com) February 23, 2012 -- Cavities are the consequence of tooth decay. Cavities are treated with dental fillings, which stop the progression of decay. Decay leading to cavities is caused by the behavior of bacteria in your mouth. You can prevent decay by adopting certain habits and asking your dentist about the effectiveness of other prevention measures.
What is a Cavity?
A cavity is a hole in your tooth caused by decay. As decay progresses, cavities form without causing any sensation or pain. Bacteria and a reduced salivary flow are the primary causes of cavities.

Decay begins when plaque is allowed to build up on your teeth. Bacteria in your mouth contribute to the formation of plaque. As the bacteria feed on sugar, starches and other foods on your teeth, they produce an acidic waste product. The acid, bacteria, and your saliva combine to form plaque.
Plaque begins eating away at your tooth's enamel. As the decay progresses through the layers of tooth, a cavity is created. If the decay is allowed to penetrate the inner pulp of the tooth, serious damage will be caused. Decay of the tooth root may require a root canal. For this reason, it is important to have cavities filled by your dentist to stop the progression of decay.
Prevention of Cavities

Your dentist can suggest ways to prevent cavities. Although cavities can be effectively treated with dental fillings, you can avoid the expense by preventing cavities altogether. Preventative measures suggested by your dentist may include:
• Avoiding certain foods and beverages. Sugary and starchy foods are especially likely to cling to your teeth and be feasted upon by bacteria. You can limit how often you consume sugary and starchy foods, and you can brush your teeth or rinse your mouth with water after eating and drinking.
• Improving your oral hygiene habits. Brush twice a day, and ask your dentist about the correct brushing technique. Flossing is also essential to removing plaque from around your teeth. Floss once a day, contouring the floss around the edges of each tooth.

• Visiting the dentist every six months for a teeth cleaning. Some plaque simply cannot be removed with your at-home oral hygiene routine. Using special equipment, hygienists and dentists remove plaque build-up on your teeth.
Ask your dentist about the efficacy of other ways to prevent cavities, including mouthwashes, tooth sealants, and fluoride treatments.
