COMPTON, CA – Community leaders in Compton today stated that a YouTube video entitled “Business As Usual” perfectly captures the political corruption of the current administration of Mayor Eric Perrodin. The video highlights recent controversies surrounding city hall concerning patronage, nepotism and pay-to-play, and can be viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9wZu__krNio.
The ad first addresses a pay-to-play controversy in which it was reported that the city’s waste hauler, Pacific Coast Waste, was seeking favoritism through campaign contributions. For instance, it was revealed by The Compton Bulletin that Pacific Coast Waste contributed $15,000 to Mayor Perrodin for his campaign in 2009. (The Compton Bulletin, August 19, 2009) Earlier this year, Pacific Coast Waste was awarded a no-bid, five-year $45 million contract without having any previous experience in any other community.
The second controversy concerns nepotism and a $95,000 contract the city provided to Mayor Perrodin’s brother Percy and his company to provide municipal law enforcement services to the city. (Los Angeles Wave, May 13, 2010) And the third issue involves the reestablishment of the city’s police department which was disbanded 10 years ago under a cloud of corruption. Many people see this as an effort to create a political patronage machine for the mayor. (KTTV, Fox 11, June 1, 2010)
“Since the Sheriff’s department has taken over, we’ve seen a 48 percent drop in the homicide rate so clearly public safety isn’t the reason Mayor Perrodin wants to reinstitute the police force,” said William Kemp. “He obviously wants an additional mechanism to provide jobs for his cronies.”
He added, “We now see a clear trend emerging. This mayor’s agenda can be described as patronage, nepotism and pay-to-play.”
