A Word about CFLs and Mercury Contamination of Canada’s Wetlands and Marshes

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) December 10, 2011 -- A Word about CFLs and Mercury Contamination of Canada’s Wetlands and Marshes
Last year in British Columbia, Canada, almost 4 million CFL “eco-friendly lightbulbs” were purchased. This is down from their peak sales in 2007 est. at 4.7 million. We can assume millions of CFLs have burnt out or failed every year and these products are now making their way to our local landfills.
"But there’s drop off centers everywhere, most get returned "
Thanks to all private Canadian companies who collect and properly dispose of these toxic, breakable items.

Unfortunately, the number of CFLs targeted for collection in 2012 is only 19 to 24%

This report indicates very low public awareness about this programs existence and many people are unaware CFLs should not be mixed with household garbage.
Although municipal garbage receptacles carry multiple warnings about products that are not accepted such as batteries, paint paper and cardboard, they have no warning about CFL bulbs.

At LED Canada, we believe we will see the end of mercury-based HID lighting, CFL's and fluorescent lights within the next 15 to 20 years at the most. Maximum effort must be put into recapture programs that prevent mercury laced lighting products from entering local landfills therefore keeping mercury out of our local streams and waterways and wetlands and oceans.
We believe a simple sticker campaign could greatly raise awareness on this topic. A small” no CFL sticker” for the top of municipal garbage receptacles could go a long way to educating British Columbia's and raising awareness of this serious environmental issue.
