A Virtual Assistant (VA) is a skilled professional who provides work from a remote location. This is a fast growing job market, even in today’s weakened economy. Many companies utilize a VA in order to save money over a traditional employee. Companies don't need to pay for benefits, insurance, taxes, or overtime.  VA’s are independent contractors which means companies can hire for specific projects and don't have to guarantee 40 hours of work per week like they would for a full-time employee.  (VA’s provide their own office space, equipment, and software.)

The goal of a VA is to do the daily tasks that are time wasters for a business person. This frees up the executive to focus on more important things like making sales and servicing customers instead of mindless chores such as data entry, creating documents, or putting together a mailing.

VA’s are typically very flexible to the needs of the business. If a project has a looming deadline and help is needed at the last minute to get it done, a VA can be called in without notice. Another way a company can use a VA would be for a temporary assignment – once the work ends, the company has no further commitment.

Lots of workers these days are performing the jobs of two, three, or more people because positions have been eliminated. A VA would be one way for a company to secure extra help when busy, but without having to pay for an extra employee when business is slow. The same thing can be accomplished by hiring a temp, but a VA will usually be cheaper than a temp service. There is also the added benefit that once the VA has worked with the company there will be a level of familiarization that can’t be achieved with a temp who would likely be a different worker every time.

VA’s can specialize in one area, but many specialize in being a jack-of-all-trades in order to meet the client’s needs no matter what the project entails.
