(Hartford, Connecticut) – The Connecticut Laborers’ District Council announced today that Charles LeConche, business manager for the Connecticut Laborers’ District Council, has been appointed as a member on the newly established Connecticut Competitiveness Council. Administered by the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), the 18 member council will recommend ways to promote the state’s competitiveness and produce its first report by January 1, 2011. LeConche’s term is effective October 1, 2010 and expires on September 30, 2014.
Established by legislation on July 1, 2010, the Connecticut Competitiveness Council consists of members from different geographic regions and economic and social sectors. Five state agency heads will also serve as nonvoting, ex officio council members. The council will advise DECD about the state's competitiveness when it prepares the state's five-year strategic economic development strategy. The council will report annually to the governor, DECD commissioner and Commerce Committee about the status of its recommendations and those of the economic clusters.
The Connecticut Laborers’ District Council represents approximately 7,500 members employed in the construction industry, public sector and other building and trade fields throughout the state. The Laborers’ International Union, founded in 1903 largely by immigrant workers, includes more than 800,000 members who work in construction and hazardous materials remediation, as well as in healthcare, the U.S. Postal Service and other public service sectors of the economy.
