Q (Journalist): Hi, Director Jiang! Today our topic is IOT and Intelligent Home and you have been engaged in this research for a long time. Firstly, I want to ask, does this come true now?

A (Director Jiang): hello, emcee! Hello everyone! Today, I’m very honored to tell everyone that the concept of intelligent home has almost been realized.

Q: That’s great! It will indeed benefit people a lot. However, many people are still unfamiliar with these concepts, especially IOT. Would you please tell us, what is IOT?

A: Sure. IOT is an integrated application of intelligent sensing, identification technology, pervasive computing and ubiquitous network. It is called the third wave of development of the world’s information industry after computer and the Internet. Simply speaking, IOT is the product of Internet innovation, which can achieve the dialogue between human and object. Intelligent home is the best reflection. And later, I will give you some examples.

Q: Is there any supportive policy on IOT development?

A: Since Premier Wen Jia bao put forward the concept “Sense China”, IOT was officially listed as the one of the five national newly-emerging strategic industries and was written into the government work report. Our country is very supportive on developing of IOT and the government will spare no effort to implement preferential policies to encourage relevant companies.

Q: What stage is the IOT developing on, at present?

A: it has now gotten out of the confusion state, and every cloud has a silver lining. We can see now it is striding ahead.

Q: What does “every cloud has a silver lining” mean?

A: It means that at the beginning, fewer people are familiar with IOT and they even haven’t heard of it before. It is a chance for IOT developing. Later, when people get a little familiar with it, they want to know what IOT can do for us in our daily life and then someone creates some specific applications such as intelligent home, which is just the “sliver lining” mean. However, this is not enough, there are still many advantages and applications waiting to be dug out. Therefore, researchers need to work harder to make full use of IOT.

Q: We often hear about some reports about intelligent home. It is said that it can have a remote control of home appliance, is that true?

A: Yes, it is true. It is just like that intelligent home gives life to home appliances to enable them to communicate with you. If you want to have a remote communication, it has to access network and some sensing devices are also needed.

Q: Sounds complicated. I think that maybe most people are just like me and we are still confused. Could you please give us an example?

A: OK. Let me give an application example. Imagine that you are single and always on business, every time you get back, you must be very tired. However, nobody will help you turn on the air conditioner or electric fan. Nobody will help you boil water. Does it mean that you can only do these things after you get home? You are so tired that you even want to have a nanny to do these for you, but the condition does not allow you to do so. Therefore, you need the intelligent home to help you. The premise is that you must have a cell phone, an intelligent one is better. You can turn on the air conditioner and water heater 20 or 30 minutes before you get home through your cell phone.

Q: Is it more suitable for single people or people who are often on business?

A: Yes. Comparatively speaking, it is more suitable for these people. But we also have to consider about another thing. We all know that many inventions are promoted by lazy bones, and maybe with the development of times, intelligent home will become the mainstream. The first mover has appeared, and I believe that there would be more and more people using intelligent home.

Q: In addition to these functions. Are there any other advantages?

A: Yes. It also has surveillance function. When you are not at home, you can use the intelligent home to see your home’s situations clearly. It can help prevent burglaries and fire and provide wireless alarm. When you receive the report, you can choose whether to call the security center or not. Usually, the security office or local police station will take actions immediately so that to minimize the losses.

Q: Sounds great! Home appliances equal to half of a robot.

A: We have made such investigations before. 80% citizens have this willing, especially the families which always have no family member at home are more inclined to use IOT intelligent home.

Q: When will it be widely applied?

A: According to our calculation, it might need 3 to 5 years. It depends on the development of IOT and people’s acceptance. IOT can not only be applied on intelligent home, it can also become a good assistant of human being. IOT covers many research fields and the relevant research is long, so we need to wait patiently. But I believe, it won’t take too long, and people will see many application examples around us. We will enjoy advantages brought by IOT soon.
