Controlling Your Emotions And Food

Our body makes use of a wonderful mechanism. Perfectly on time it gives a signal that it’s time to eat. This works as follows: when the body needs food, first it gives a sign of discomfort. Somewhere in the body a feeling is created that is linked to the need for food. If this person waits a while he feels his blood sugar has dropped. The body constantly measures the amount of sugar (glucose) in its blood. If this amount falls below a certain threshold, this person can feel a little dizzy. Some people are slightly irritated, others go even vibrate. These are all signs that they are in need of food.

Our body also let us knows when we’ve eaten enough. First it gives a signal from its upper abdomen. Just below the diaphragm, an inch or two above the belly button. After a while the blood sugar rises and we feel a comfortable feeling of fullness.

These are beautiful signals from the body.

Food and feelings

During our lives, many of us have learned to link food with feelings. We eat cake when we celebrate positive events, children treat candy when they celebrate their birthday on school and they are given sweets when they did something good. Our brains make a connection between the feeling that the food gives us and the events of that time. We coupled our eating habits with a signal from the body that has nothing to do with food. We have learned that food is the answer to a feeling of unease. And it works, as it leads the attention from the unpleasant feeling. After a while, the uncomfortable feeling returns and we’re back where we started.
Children won’t eat anymore when they are satisfied, even if their plate isn’t empty. Sometimes they eat more when they are in their growth period. They can perfectly judge on what their body needs. Unfortunately, children are often forced to empty their plate. They are taught to ignore the signals from their body. Maybe when we were young, we also learned not to listen to these signals.

And that's the interesting part of feelings and emotions. They influence your thoughts until they are heard, as signals of the body. They have something to report. They note: this is pleasant and this is not. Every emotion has a positive intention. This positive intention is the actual meaning of this emotion. Emotions that go unnoticed become neglected. Emotions that are neglected over a longer period become persistent. These emotions will call your attention more and are harder to ignore.

And that's exactly what happens when we eat because of a certain emotion. It gives the emotion not the attention that it really needs. We give a false solution. And when our plait is empty or our sweets and snacks are gone, the uncomfortable feeling comes back. Often we feel a sick feeling because of all the food. And the feeling of guilt will show up again. Yet another reason to eat more!

The trick: recognizing and acknowledging emotions and feelings

If we feel the urge to eat or go snacking, we have to ask ourselves first: do we really need it right now. Do we really need something to eat or do we need something else? We have to teach ourselves to listen to our body. Eat when we’re hungry. Stop when we are full. Reply to our feelings and emotions in an appropriate way. This way we react physically and emotionally in a healthy way.

The trick lies in recognizing and acknowledging the emotions. Recognize the emotion as an emotion and not as a feeling for something tasty to eat. Then remove the positive intention behind the emotion and do something with it. This way we answer our emotions in an appropriate and healthy way.
