http://www.coto-consulting.com The founder of Coto Consulting is Christina Schwerdtfeger, who holds a PhD in chemistry and had worked as an environmental scientist for other companies for 23 years. “I found myself laid off unexpectedly in 2009 and decided that it was the right time to take the plunge as an entrepreneur. The formation of Coto Consulting has been rewarding on a personal level and is in sync with current market drivers and business needs. I am pleased and honored to have received this award from CCBJ.”
Green workers include many professionals besides environmental activists and tree-huggers. The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) defines green jobs as “work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development (R&D), administrative, and service activities that contribute(s) substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality.“ For example, if an electrician wants a green job, he/she might consider working for a company that installs photovoltaic panels. A welder or truck driver might assist with the fabrication and delivery of wind turbines. Dr. Schwerdtfeger’s degree is in chemistry, but she received additional training and then became accredited as a GHG lead verifier by the State of California. She works for industrial and government clients, as well as law firms.
An increase in demand for green workers has been seen by staffing companies such as Winefield Technical Solutions (WTS). Jimi Reed, a technical recruiter at WTS, says that, “There has been a noticeable increase in job requisitions for green professionals over the last 12 months. We’ve been filling a lot of staffing requests and there seems to be no slowing down.”
The good news is that there are local training programs for people who want to update their skills and position themselves for a green job. The Los Angeles/Orange County Environmental Training Center is a non-profit organization which is located in Anaheim that offers free or low cost classes. Dr. Schwerdtfeger spoke at a breakfast symposium on March 23rd called “Helping You Navigate GHG Compliance Issues at Various Regulatory Levels”. This symposium was oriented primarily towards engineers and scientists.
Another option for people who are looking to expand their skills: University of California Irvine’s Extension Program offers several certificate programs: sustainability leadership, environmental management, sustainable buildings, and decision making for climate change. Dr. Schwerdtfeger teaches an online class called “Sustainability Reporting: Drivers, Protocols and Quantitative Methods”. She said, “I really enjoy teaching these classes and watching my students blossom as they acquire new skills and increase their marketability.”
In September 2009, California committed $75 million for a green jobs training program, which is being touted as the largest state-sponsored green jobs training program. CCBJ estimated in December 2008 that the climate change consulting market is $1.9 billion worldwide and $670 million in the United States and is expected to double within the next five years. It’s clear that green companies such as Coto Consulting are helping to meet this market demand and drive the economic recovery by providing technical expertise and training to others.
