FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NOIDA, U.P, India, Republic of (Free-Press-Release.com) February 24, 2012 -- The clock is ticking faster towards MAH CET 2012. The exam, which is scheduled on Sunday, March 11, 2012, is just two weeks away. In the MBAUniverse.com series on MAH CET 2012, today we will talk about the area of Verbal Ability. Verbal Ability and Verbal Reasoning consist a major chunk of the MAH CET paper.

In MAH CET 2011, the questions in this area were from Reading Comprehension, Cloze, Spotting the Errors, Inference, Para Completion, Syllogisms and Statement Conclusion. The Verbal Reasoning area consists of questions on analytical and visual puzzles.

Rahine Bose, MAH CET topper and alumnus of SIMSREE Mumbai gives a detailed structure of the question topics and the expected number of questions from those areas.
Broad Areas Topics No. of expected questions
Verbal Ability Error Spotting 7
Sentence Completion 10
Reading Comprehension 15
Paragraph Construction 10
Vocabulary 7

Verbal Reasoning Strong-Weak Arguments 5
Logical Conclusions 5
Probability True-False 7
Cause –Effect, Course of action 7

Gaurav Mashalkar, MAH CET 2011 Rank 1 holder and JBIMS Mumbai student says, “Important topics for CET from English perspective are passage section. Also you need to be good in basics like synonyms, fill in the blanks.”

At this stage, practice should be your keyword for cracking the Verbal Ability and Verbal Reasoning area. “You need good basic reading comprehension and English vocabulary skills. For VA and logic focus on practicing and also try to look at breaking down the logic into smaller parts to begin with.”

The best way to practice is by taking regular mock tests. In this way, you will get a better grip towards managing the speed and time. “If you attempt around 25to 30 mocks, do proper analysis, the scores are bound to go up,” says Bose.

Vinayak Kudva, Product Head, IMS Learning says, “RC passages are no longer long affairs. They are not more than 600 words long and you have plenty of time. So DO NOT read the questions first. Unknowingly you will not be reading the entire passage, but only trying to find the content relevant to answering the question. The result is a fractured understanding of the passage.”

The second question, which is on the minds of the test takers is how important is the reading speed, especially for solving the RC questions? According to Saumya Jain, Academic Head and VA expert, Career Launcher, reading speed is not very important. “Read the passage once quickly in order to understand the central idea. In case certain areas of the passage elude your understanding at first, do not worry,” she says.

In this context, Kudva says, “You cannot read the entire passage at the same intensity. The amount of mental energy you spend should depend upon the density of the text. Start at a medium reading speed. Increase or decrease the speed depending upon the content of the text.”

While solving the question of RC passages, you should first read the questions and gauge which part of the passage will bear the answer. For this, reading the passage first is very important. “Read the questions and come back to the relevant portion of the passage in order to eliminate options. Look for Key words in the question stem in order to find the relevant part of the passage. This will help increase accuracy,” suggests Jain.

The other topics in the Verbal Ability part are Vocabulary and English Usage. For Vocabulary, you should not learn any new word now but revise only the words, their meanings and usages you have learnt so far.

You should focus on the Verbal Logic questions and Critical Reasoning questions to get a good score in the Logical Reasoning part as well. “Practice questions from verbal logic like –Para jumbles, Para completions, Fact Inference Judgment questions etc.,” says Jain.

If you have taken MBA entrance exams like CAT, XAT, IIFT etc, the preparation strategy won’t be something drastically different.
