Perhaps you have bought such Harry Potter Halloween Costumes already. You will get your chance to wear them soon. But have you ever wondered how these costumes came into being? There is no doubt of course that the primary source of imagination is the world famous author, J.K.Rowling. But how did her imagination become a reality that we all enjoy over and over in the various installments of Harry Potter? Costumes for the first part of the Harry Potter series, were designed by Oscar nominated costume designer, Judianna Makovsky.
After having initial discussions with the author of the book and deciding on the fabrics for each character, the designer took inspiration from 20th century boarding school uniforms in Britain, for the costumes of Hogwarts’ students. The author herself was inspired by Renaissance era paintings for creating Harry Potter robes. For the headless Nick, early 1600’s fashion was chosen and for Mr.Snape, a Victorian style robe was chosen, which was buttoned till his neck. The robe has a tail at the end to resemble a snake’s forked tongue. Costume designs originating from the renaissance era of 1400-1600 were chosen for Dumbledore and special velvet fabrics were used for the Sorcerer’s robes. Hagrid’s coat was made of fur.
The costume designers in the later parts, of Harry Potter, such as Jany Temime, did not have much work on the primary characters as their costumes were already in place. They had to evolve more matured costumes for characters such as Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasly, due to their growing age and create costumes for new characters appearing in each movie. However, costume designing differed to a slight extent based on the actors playing the parts. For example, costumes for the character of Horace Slughorn had to differ as the actor playing the part in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince had a different personality.
As popular as the Harry Potter franchise is, there is hard work and creative imagination behind every costume and accessory. It is for this very reason that dark magic has become the craze for this Halloween. Want to become the intelligent wizard, this season?
