Save your eggshells to make the perfect Easter candles, adding light to your home at the end of winter.
You can easily make some decorative candles this spring with these easy to follow instructions from Melt Scented Candles.
How to make eggshell candles for Easter
First, crack some eggs at the narrow end to save as much of the eggshells as possible.
Clean your eggshells using hot water to cook the lining of the eggshell and run your finger around the inside of the egg to pull out the inner skin.
It is very important to remove the whole of the egg’s inner skins. Otherwise, mould will grow over time.
Allow the eggshells to dry completely. In a separate heatproof container, pour in a few teaspoons of vinegar.
After filling the container with boiling water, about three quarters full, add some food colouring.
Put the eggs in the boiling water for about five minutes. Then, remove them and allow them to dry thoroughly.
Make sure the wicks for your decorative candles are slightly longer than you want them to be.
Thread the wick through the wick holder and use some pliers to squeeze it in order to hold it in place.
Using some hot glue stick the wick holder to the bottom of the eggshell.
Now prepare your wax. If you would like your decorative candles to be scented, add your fragrances at this point.
Once you have filled your eggshells with wax, you can use toothpicks, pencils, or any long implement to hold the wicks in place. This prevents them from falling in the middle.
The wax will eventually harden and cool - which is the time to trim your wick. Your eggshell decorative scented candles are complete.
Cautionary advice
If using food colouring, when making your decorative scented candles, ensure you protect your surfaces and clothes. Food coloring can leave permanent stains.
It is also wise to cover the area when using your scented candles’ hot wax – which can also be harmful to your clothes and surfaces.
Most importantly, never leave your decorative scented candles unattended.
