Credit crunch householders urged to stay safe with gas safety - carbon monoxide week
When it comes to gas safety, you can't DIY. Always use a Gas safety Registered engineer.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) November 21, 2011 --
A Tyneside gas expert is urging cash-strapped householders not to cut corners when it comes to safety.
Gas Engineer, Richard Hall from West Monkseaton says people struggling to balance their household budgets could skip essential safety checks or, worse still, attempt to fix appliances themselves.
“I’ve spoken to a few people recently who were seriously considering skipping their annual boiler safety check and even a couple of horror stories about DIYers trying to fix appliances themselves. It’s just not worth the risk,” he said.

http://www.highlightspr.co.uk “Carbon monoxide is a killer and only Gas Safe registered engineers are allowed to work on gas appliances by law. That’s because gas can be lethal if it’s not handled properly.”
Richard had a lifetime experience as a gas fitter for British Gas before starting his own business, Complete Heat Solutions in 2005. He’s been so successful he has taken on an apprentice Dan Maguire, from Heaton, who’s in his final year of training.
“It’s about this time of year when people think about having their appliances serviced for winter. I’m worried in the current financial climate that people may cut out the wrong costs.
“I spoke to one young lady who said her friend’s dad would do it. He wasn’t a practicing Gas Safe engineer. It would have been a huge gamble.
“I’m a great fan of DIY and I’ve always been willing to have a go at just about any job. I used to be a singer in a punk band in my youth and we did everything ourselves from making and mixing demos, to publishing a fanzine and publicity, with varying results. But I draw the line at gas safety. Always leave it to the experts.”
Carbon monoxide, sometimes called just CO, is a colourless, odourless and very toxic gas released when any fuel burns, not just gas but also wood and coal and oil. Appliances which are kept in good working condition produce little CO. But badly operating or poorly vented appliances can lead to lethal CO concentrations in your home.
Symptoms can include dizziness, sickness, headaches, tiredness and irregular breathing.
It’s easy to protect yourself. Learn to recognise the symptoms and get all your fuel appliances serviced by an expert at least once a year. If you are renting, your landlord should be able to provide you with a certificate proving he’s done it. Ask to see it.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week starts on November 21.
