Crestor belongs to a group of medications called statins that are intended to lower cholesterol. Far from the only statin on the market, Crestor has become one of the most popular since its release in 2003.
Crestor contains a statin known as rosuvastatin, which works as a competitive inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. While similar to other statins in its ability to fight high cholesterol, rosuvastatin also contains sulfur, and has been aggressively marketed by AstraZeneca as the premier choice for cholesterol reduction.
LDL cholesterol causes fatty deposits in your arteries. These can calcify, resulting in blockage of blood flow and an increased risk for several health problems including heart attack and stroke. As such, statins have played a valuable role in reducing a patient’s risk for health complications, and combined with healthy lifestyle choices, have allowed many people who suffer from high cholesterol to continue leading active and productive lives. The problem with Crestor and its active ingredient rosuvastatin is that it not only fails to be more effective than other statins, it has conclusively been linked to causing its own heart disorders.
Crestor and Rhabdomyolysis
The logic was simple: if 10mg of rosuvastatin is effective at reducing your risk of heart attack or stroke, 40mg is better. This is flawed logic. Study after study has found that rosvuvastatin in higher doses is not more effective; it’s deadly.
Excessive doses of rosuvastatin are linked to rhabdomyolysis, a disease that depletes muscle mass. Rhabdomyolysis may target large sections of muscles, but may also target one muscle or one group of muscles. Often, rhabdomyolysis targets the heart. This, in turn, leads to heart failure, a pre-condition for heart attack and stroke.
Heart failure is different than a heart attack. Heart failure occurs when your heart becomes too weak to effectively pump blood and meet your body’s demand for oxygen. Heart failure is difficult to treat, and can result in fatigue, shortness of breath, and other chronic medical conditions. In addition, people with a weakened heart are much more likely to experience heart attack and stroke. As a result, Crestor may actually heighten your risk for the very issues it was intended to prevent.
Crestor Attorneys
AstraZeneca is aware of Crestor’s link to heart failure. Even so, they have failed to modify their formula, or to properly warn doctors and patients, of this potential complication. As such, they must be held accountable for the damages they have caused. An aggressive and experienced defective drug attorney will be able to assist you in building your case and getting the compensation you deserve if you have been injured by Crestor.
