Cayo Coco is one of the fascinating keys in Jardines del Rey, in Sabana Camagüey archipelago on the northern coast of Cuba. Jardines del Rey (Gardens of the King) was named by Spanish explorer Diego Velázquez, who between 1513 and 1514 wanted to honour to Spanish King “Fernando el Católico”. Cayo Coco is the fourth largest island in extension of the Cuban archipelago with 370 km2 and 22 km of beach and owes its name to the white Coco bird or “ibis del bosque”.
Cayo Coco is a natural reserve where as many as 159 different kinds of birds have been sighted and Cuba’s largest flamingo colony is located there. The most prominent animals are the wild boars and the endemic iguanas. One of the most important barrier reefs on the planet is very near Cayo Coco. Ernest Hemingway immortalized Cayo Coco in his novel “Islands in the Stream”. It is linked to mainland by a 17-kilometre road over the sea called “pedraplén” and by Cayo Coco International Airport. There are available one-day excursions to Cayo Coco.
