CUNY LGBT TASK FORCE Supports Core Principles of Occupy Wall Street, Intends to March in Solidarity.

For immediate release:

New York, N.Y., October 22th 2011

The CUNY Wide LGBT Task Force is the only inter CUNY organization which consists of LGBTQetc leaders as representatives from all 23 respective City University of New York Campuses. We exist to ensure that every CUNY campus has a safe space for LGBTQetc students and employees, protecting and enforcing LGBTQetc rights for CUNY students and employees, making recommendations to the University Student Senate and Board of Trustees, Collaborating with LGBTQetc organizations at individual CUNY campuses on projects, campaigns, and events that increase awareness about LGBTQetc issues. .

On October 29th 2011 at 1:00 PM in Union Square the CUNY LGBT Task force will join the larger group of "CUNY on the March" to support core principles of the Occupy Wall Street Movement"

Core Education Principles include:

Over the past three years, tuition rates at CUNY have been raised more than five times, and by 60% overall.

Over the next five years, tuition at CUNY will increase by another 25%.

In this period of economic hardship, the lack of government support that caused the incremental rise in our tuition has resulted in the disenfranchisement of many CUNY students, many of whom belong to working-class families and the LGBT community.

The Occupy Wall Street movement arose out of the frustration felt by countless Americans who believe that the growing inequality in our country's economic policies are threatening the survival of a fair, just, and equal democratic society.

Albany's failure to increase funding to CUNY is a striking example of this inequality.

Thus far, our elected officials have failed to recognize the damage they have caused, and it is our responsibility to impress upon them the fact that increasing funding for higher education is the best way to strengthen our economy and restore our country's vanishing middle class.

We call for transparent appointments to the Board of Trustees that are not mere political paybacks.
Trustees that are focused on student success, not their political future.

We support our adjuncts and faculty and demand they be provided a living wage with adequate health insurance.

Affordable higher education is a fundamental right, and not a privilege.

If you believe, as we do, that it's time to take matter into our own hands, then please stand with us in Solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street Movement on Saturday, October 29th at 1:00 PM in Union Square.

Core LGBTQ Principles:

• End Discriminatory Blood Drives on all CUNY campuses
• Support off campus Blood Donation
• Fund and create LGBT Studies at all CUNY Campuses
• Support LGBT Homeless Youth
• End Homophobia and LGBTQ Violence.
• The right to unbiased information about the historical and continuing contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in all subject areas, including art, literature, science, sports, and history/social studies.

• The right to positive role models, both in person and in the curriculum; the right to accurate information about themselves, free of negative judgment, and delivered by trained adults who not only inform lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students but affirm them
• The right to attend schools free of verbal and physical harassment, where education, not survival, is the priority.
• The right to a heritage free of crippling self-hate and unchallenged discrimination.

The CUNY LGBT Task force is committed to a non-violent civil discourse in its demands, and withdrawals it support whenever acts of violence or destruction of property are employed as a tactic.
