Cynthai Frazier Asks Are Your Teens Protected Online and on the Phone?

February 17, 2010

According to Cynthia Frazier of the Energy Tour Café, ―The new digital divide is between parents and teens. Neither parents nor teens understand the serious consequences of sending inappropriate text.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Free-Press-Release.com) February 17, 2010 -- SAN BERNARDINO, CA— Do you really know what your children and teens are doing on the Internet, or
with their cell phones and iPods? Teens are able to use digital devices in ways that many parents can’t.
According to AAA, 46 percent of teens text while driving. Another survey concluded that 20 percent of
teens have sent or posted nude photos or videos of themselves using a cell phone. Parents don’t have a clue
as to how their teens are using this new technology.

According to Cynthia Frazier of the Energy Tour Café, ―The new digital divide is between parents and
teens. Neither parents nor teens understand the serious consequences of sending inappropriate text
messages and photos.‖ she says. That photo your teen may think is funny could just be his or her ticket to a
fine or even jail. That sarcastic Facebook entry may just be the thing that throws someone into a violent
response. Teens need to learn how to be careful with what they post online and what they send to others;
and what’s safe and what’s not safe to e-mail or text to friends. In fact, many new laws are being put into

place across the country concerning improper use of this new and easily accessible digital technology Not
only is it against the law to text and drive in many states, teens are being arrested for housing inappropriate
material on their cell phone.
To make matters worse, Texting while driving has become a leading cause of deaths on the road.
Studies now show that teens who text while driving are up to six times more likely to have an accident as
evidenced by an collision where five cheerleaders were killed. An investigation showed that the driver was
probably texting while driving. ―What is unfortunate,‖ says Frazier, ―is that there is a low cost remedy to

the texting while driving problem. For a mere $9.95 per month, parents can provide their teens hands free
speech to text service. This eliminates the danger of texting while driving and gives parents peace of mind
when their teen is in the car.
Frazier’s concern for the lack of knowledge on these issues, prompted her to develop an awareness
campaign called DIGI-Safe 101 – a series of workshops for youth and parents. Funded by grants from the
Verizon Foundation and the California Consumer Protection Foundation, Cynthia has already reached over
500 teens and adults by presenting workshops at the San Bernardino Feldheym Library, at the Education is

a Civil Right Parent/Youth Summit at Arroyo Valley High School, at the Inland Empire Job Corp, at Youth
Action Project, the Young Writers Club, and at a Camp Oliuwa summer retreat Youth Development
Program hosted by San Bernardino Employment and Training Agency (SBETA), Cynthia will continue to
educate as many youth and parents that she can reach.
The DigiSafe 101 program goals are to make parents and teens aware of tools available and to ensure
that when teens get in a car to drive, go online, or use their cell phones and digital communication tools,
they understand the rules of the game. Text etiquette and appropriate use of the internet are not necessarily

taught in schools, and most parents don’t know where to start in teaching their kids the proper uses of these
new communications tools, says Frazier.
Want to learn more? Want your children and teens to understand their responsibilities when they
communicate over public airwaves? Then attend an upcoming Digi-Safe presentation or workshop.
Ms. Frazier will make a presentation in June at the 2010 Education is a Civil Right‖ Parent/Youth Summit,
hosted by the Family Resource Center of the San Bernardino City Unified School District. She is also
available for schools, community and church organizations, or youth clubs who want to help youth and

their parents become aware.
