Cyprus Negotiating Team Prepare For Talks In Greentree New York

(Free-Press-Release.com) January 20, 2012 -- Speaking after the meeting, Emiliou noted that the team discussed with Pascoe the forthcoming meeting of Cyprus leaders with the UN Secreatry-General Ban ki-Moon at Greentree estate, in Long Island, NY.

He further said that UN plans vis-a-vis the meeting were not definite, but added that the UN Secretary General is expected to spend during the two days a big amount of time with the two leaders, trying to achieve progress in specific negotiation chapters.
The Ambassador also said that the finalization of the meeting’s schedule is expected on Friday.

The team will continue its meetings today and tomorrow with representatives of the five permanent UN Security Council members. In the afternoon, local time, a meeting is scheduled with the representatives of Russia and France, while the meetings with the remaining three permanent members, the US, UK and China, are scheduled for Friday.

Cyprus President Demetris Christofias is expected to arrive in New York on Friday noon (local time), while, according to UN instructions, the official launch of talks will take place on Monday morning. Later on the same day, UN SG Special Advisor Alexander Downer will brief the Press on the course of talks at Greentree.

Talks are expected to officially conclude on Wednesday morning with a statement by the UN Secretary General, in the presence of both leaders, at UN Headquarters.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Peace talks are currently underway between President Christofias and the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community.

The UN Secretary-General will be meeting with the leaders of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities at Greentree, in Long Island on Monday, 23 January and Tuesday, 24 January. The previous such meeting took place on October 30 and 31, again at Greentree estate.CNA
