D.I.E. — Is Live
As I Found It announces: The Digital Image Essay, DIE is now on line ready for examination and download. New DIE’s will be added in the coming days and weeks. “Your feedback is important to me. Please look at our offering(s) and let we know: What you think about it? How it can be improved? What themes or topics you would like to see? How well our download system works, or not? And anything you want to say, said Dennis Nikols.”
In his recent blog “Digital Image Essay” (http://asifoundit.com/blog) Dennis discussed the concept of the non-journalistic photographic essay. He also created a video blog essay to illustrate what a DIE might look like. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf603eH2i5g) Here it is in the flesh. (http://www.asifoundit.com/photoessay.php?id=1)
While we all have an idea of what a DIE is, few non-journalistic DIE’s are available. Photographic or image essays are well known and have a long history in the print medium. Very few seem to exist in the electronic world. As I Found It is changing this with its new DIE Gallery. To maximize our changing effectiveness I am asking everyone to give me as much feed back as you feel comfortable with. I need to know how you like it and why or why not. I need to know what topics or subjects you want to see and how you are responding to those now offered.
DIE’s are produced in pdf format and as a slide show in mov format. The essays can be downloaded to computers of course but also on note pads, cell phones and digital picture frames, any device that can display the format. “I am very excited about the digital picture frame appellation,” Dennis says. “The success of the e-book inspired me. Most e-book readers do not deal well with images. They are not designed for it. All the other e-tools do. I think the pdf format will also be popular since it can be displayed in a variety of way.”
“Every image or photograph is a narrative. Ever image or photograph tells a story, its own story. Put a group of related images or stories together and they become a longer story. That is what DIE’s are all about. My idea of a DIE will no doubt be different for other artists, mine is quite different from the journalistic tradition. The DIE is a bit of a work in progress, as no firm standards exist. My thinking is the price should be somehow relate to the number of images in the set. I’m not saying others are wrong, I’m not saying I’m right. Nothing here is absolute in the least. I am saying this is new, different and exciting, and I took a creative chance to develop it and a financial risk to market it,” says Dennis Nikols, Sr. Photographer at As I Found It.
The first DIE available is: Not Forgotten (http://www.asifoundit.com/photoessay.php?id=1). Priced at $17
