D.I.E. Digital Image Essay — Coming Soon
As I Found It innovates again. “This is new, different and exciting, and I took a creative chance to develop it,” says Dennis Nikols, Sr. Photographer at As I Found It. Dennis is talking about As I Found It’s new Digital Image Essay product or DIE for short. “We will be releasing our initial DIE series very soon.”
In his recent blog “Digital Image Essay” (http://asifoundit.com/blog) Dennis discussed the concept of the non-journalistic photographic essay. He also created a video blog essay to illustrate what a DIE might look like. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cf603eH2i5g)
While we all have an idea of what a DIE is, few non-journalistic DIE’s are available. Photographic or image essays are well known and have a long history in the print medium. Very few seem to exist in the electronic world. As I Found It is changing this with its new DIE Gallery.
DIE’s are produced in pdf format and as a slide show in mov an other formats. The essays can be downloaded to computers of course but also on note pads, cell phones and digital picture frames. “I am very excited about the digital picture frame appellation,” Dennis says. “The success of the e-book inspired me. Most e-book readers do not deal well with images. They are not designed for it. All the other e-tools do.”
“Every image or photograph is a narrative. Each one tells its own story or stories. Put a group of related images or stories together and they become a longer story. That is what DIE’s are all about. My idea of a DIE will no doubt be different then that of other artists and quite different from the journalistic tradition. This is a bit of a work in progress as no firm standards exist. The price should somehow relate to the number of images in the set. I’m not saying others are wrong, I’m not saying I’m right. I am saying this is new, different and exciting, and I took a creative chance to develop it,” says Dennis Nikols, Sr. Photographer at As I Found It.
One essay soon to be available is: Not Forgotten (14 images). Priced at $17 for large display formats.
