Question #5: Where should I advertise, and how much should I spend?
This is one of my favorite subjects because it’s pretty much all great news.
I think it’s probably safe to assume that most of you just starting your work from home adventure are a little on the lean side, financially speaking. One of the great things about online businesses is that the little guy has the opportunity to go head to head with the corporate giants. And the greatest thing? You can do it for FREE!
Let’s say you wanted to sell your own polo shirts. Fantastic. In theory, when a potential client Google’s “polo shirts,” your website should pop up on the same page as Ralph Lauren’s. That’s good. What’s great, and really exciting, is that if you plan your strategy correctly, your website will pop up before Ralph Lauren’s.
The top three organic search results are where you want to be. The paid ads, you know the ones in the fancy border at the top of the page, get clicked on three times less often than the natural, organic search results. This is where the money is.
But how, you ask?
In my opinion, here are the three most powerful methods of advertising online that will build your ranking in the search engines:
1. Write an article that directly or indirectly deals with your product or service. In this case, polo shirts. Be sure to have “polo shirts” in the title of the article, and include “polo shirts” a maximum of four times throughout the article. Then visit a site like goarticles.com which publishes your article for free. Now the search engines have something new to pick up when a user types in a search for “polo shirts.”
2. Write a blog. Using similar parameters described above, write a weekly blog about the subject matter. Start your blog at a site like wordpress.com and then link it up with pingomatic.com, which sends your blog to over thirty sites at the click of a button. Now the search engines have thirty-plus new sources for your subject.
3. Finally, video – the reigning king of free marketing. Create a two-minute video about yourself, your product line, your service, whatever, and upload to YouTube, Yahoo Video, or any of the fifty other online video hosting sites out there. Search engines LOVE video, so if you’re just going to choose one avenue for advertising, this should be it.
Okay, that’s it for today. Let me leave you with a question of my own:
The average lifespan of the American man is 76 years. How much time do you have left, and how do you want to spend it?
