(Free-Press-Release.com) August 5, 2011 --
She uses the experience of her past as snapshots, and creates beautiful sculptures that transform spaces in vibrant and unusual ways. Nothing is forgotten or ignored, all of it somehow captured and stored in her imagination and used like a database for ideas and inspirations that come spilling out when she sets out to create a new piece or set of pieces. Almost as a rule when interviewing artists, during my questioning of the inspiration behind a particular artistic decision, the reasons are not forthcoming, having been more intuitive than provoked. With rivera, i sensed the opposite, each move and direction she took, was guided by her memory. Her stories provided a wonderful way to get at the art she produces, requiring more reflection and knowledge than one could, at first glance.
Rivera was born in Mexico City, a place that is still very much inside her. Her first name, Daling was given to her by her father who had travelled extensively throughout China on motorcycle, and this great adventure is represented in her name. It allowed her father to immediately infuse her life with his positive memories of this great trip. He had ridden through China at a time when the country was still in a formative stage, a long way from becoming the modern society of today. At that time, the growth ambitions of China had not been completely formed.
The motorcycle as a method of travel was central to his life and was handed down to Daling as well. During her early days in Mexico, she spent a lot of time riding with her father throughout the country discovering the complex culture and the variety of landscapes Mexico offered. As she reached adulthood, her love of travel grew and led her to the US, and throughout Europe before settling for a time in Copenhagen.
After Copenhagen, where she studied interior design at university, her design programme allowed her to also study in Australia, where she first began her long love affair with Asia. After finishing her studies and working there for a time, she felt encumbered by the large crowd of like-minded designers. She, and her partner Eduardo Valdevieso searched for their own market, a unique place where they could allow their business to thrive, less part of the group and more independent. She told me about her decision, “Eduardo and I were deeply interested in being entrepreneurs, because you almost never find that your dreams become real without the influence, and help of others”. After spending some time in Thailand and investigating the merits of Bangkok and Chiang Mai, they settled on Phuket. The island reminded Rivera of Cancun in her native Mexico, where she had visited as a young girl. Phuket seemed on the cusp of growth and a great place to work and seven years later, the decision has proved to be fortuitous. Between her art and her interior work, Phuket has grown with Rivera in the past few years. Phuket life has also allowed her to nurture her love of an active, physical lifestyle, surfing regularly, rock climbing and participating in yoga.
