David Pryor, owner of Southern House Entertainment was born to make music. He introduces himself and his art simply: “I was born … in Dallas. I’ve always been into music, I mean, just as a passion.” Now, his rap and R & B label has a 17 track mix-tape, titled Southern House Entertainment: Out the Cage, featuring the company’s stable of rappers and artist. The EP is available by request online. The artists featured included David’s 21 year old son, Devin, also known as D.E.E.Z.Y. or Mr. Money Major, who’s style is younger gangster rap, somewhere along the lines of Lil’ Wayne. Deezy also performs R&B tracks. Other artists include Mr. Pryor himself, also known as D Flat, and Chappel Mack, both of whom represent the older vanguard of the rap game.
Southern House Entertainment was not always planned for Dallas. After school, Mr. Pryor moved out to Oakland, California. There he met a young man named Jawanza Y. Willis. According to Mr. Pryor, they “started just rapping all the time … that lead to a production.” The duo formed a group called Signett Posse, and released a 6 song tape in 1995. The EP was called Signett Posse Landscape, and the most popular track was Mother%@$# Barbeque. During this time, Mr. Pryor filed a business called BSB Records, through which he released the tape. However, after a while “[Jawanza] wanted to pursue his thing… [and they] ended up splitting up.”
Mr. Pryor moved back to Dallas, and started another label, Southern House Music, which would later change into Southern House Entertainment. He still raps and produces the beats for a huge amount of songs, and can be heard on the label’s mix-tape, but for the most part he runs the business, selling albums and creating the CDs. He explains “Everything is paid for by me. We have the music that people have heard and they want,” but because of the nature of his small business, the distribution of that music is the hardest part. Still, Southern House Entertainment is expanding, with over 100 songs and ringtones available on Myxer.com.
Southern House Entertainment was founded in 1996 by David Pryor. The roster includes artists D.E.E.Z.Y., Chappel Mack, Hotboy D. Ellis, and Flattastic. Their music is primarily rap and hip hop, with a measure of R&B. They can be found on Reverbnation.com and Myxer.com.
