Dallas, Texas. Proof That Dreams Come True! Local artist creates edible art in an unusual medium; cake. Soonja Weinstein, owner of Soonja’s bakery in Dallas, TX had a dream. Having retired from the airline industry, Soonja was passionate about finding a career where she could use her talent and passion for the arts in a way that brought joy to people’s lives. A former professional musician and a lifelong artist, Soonja turned her attention to the art of cake decorating. She attended classes at El Centro College in Dallas and graduated as a pastry chef in 2008. Soonja opened her shop, Soonja’s Bakery, on Alpha Rd. and Montfort in 2009. She soon realized that while Dallas was full of upscale bakeries which created beautiful, traditional wedding cakes, there was an unmet demand for more extravagant, artistic cakes similar to those seen on popular cable TV shows such as TLC’s The Cake Boss and Travel’s Ace of Cakes. Soonja began offering unique, one of a kind, edible works of art to her patrons and their popularity has really soared.

“We recently created a three-foot tall cake shaped like a bottle of Shiner™ Beer. When we delivered the cake to the restaurant where the party was taking place, everybody in the place stopped and watched. The reaction and the applause made me realize that we had done something special that most people have never seen before.” says Soonja. Her little bakery has begun to gain a lot of attention here in Dallas. “If you go to another bakery here in Dallas and ask for a custom cake like this, they either can’t or won’t do it. Soonja’s Bakery is the only cake bakery here in this area where I’ve been able to have a custom cake made to my exact specifications.” says Dena Rathbun, a customer of the bakery. Soonja Weinstein and her fellow artist, Rafael Coria, make up the team behind these amazing cakes.

The latest creation of Soonja’s will be this weekend at an event held by the Dallas Margarita Society. The cake will be a giant 4 foot margarita glass, modeled after the charity’s logo. Soonja beams, “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to create something like this for them. It makes me so happy to see people enjoying what I have created”.
