In addition, popular Atlanta dance studio, Dance 101, will be featuring an up-and-coming hip hop choreographer, Carrie Couch. Dance 101 is a 2009-10 choreography Sponsor. Artistic Director, Angela Harris, will also showcase a new ballet in this year’s production.
The search for the 2009-10 choreographers began in early June. Dance Canvas selects choreographers thorough a rigorous application process to audition choreographers in all styles of dance. “We had submissions from across the country. The number of applications doubled this year, and we have still been receiving choreography submissions even now, two months after the close of the search,” says Angela Harris, Executive Artistic Director. “It is clear that a platform like Dance Canvas is needed for these emerging choreographers. We are excited about this year’s ‘class’ and look forward to seeing audience reactions to their fabulous work!”
Dance Canvas continues to receive rave reviews stemming from last September’s Inaugural Performance series and events like “Urban Renaissance 2009”, which served as the premier of the partnership between Dance Canvas and Studio Clout Fine Arts Gallery. “Urban Renaissance” showcased an evening of interactive performances, live music, and live art, highlighted by artist Alfred Conteh’s live painting of a Dance Canvas piece of choreography. Audience members have offered the following praises:
"I want to praise the company for such a spectacular assortment of dance. Each piece was inspiring, sexy and moving!"
"I would like to thank you for putting together such an eclectic mixture of talent that portrays the true face of the choreographers here in Atlanta."
"There was a piece for everyone...And it was one fantastic piece after another!"
"Every 10 minutes you saw a new piece with a diverse group of dancers, costumes and music. Perfect for those of us with short attention span…!”
